A scarlet jacket

Next to a 5 tonne bronze gun from the lower gun deck, the remains of a crew member were found. He was dressed in a scarlet jacket with 24 buttons. The sleeves of the jacket are decorated with stripes, like modern symbols of rank. There were no uniforms in the Swedish navy during the 17th century (not coming for another 100 years) and the crew basically dressed in accordance with their social class. However, at times boatswains (bos'un) were provided with a jacket and knickerbockers.
